Biography

Vocalist, composer, teacher, and bandleader Raquel Marina Skilich (b. 2000) is recognized for her effortless power, versatility, and originality. Based in Toronto, she is an upcoming artist that contributes a fresh and creative singer-songwriter approach to the modern jazz scene. 

Raquel grew up studying classical piano music and has a strong background in choral singing. In 2022, she completed a bachelor’s degree in jazz comprehensive at the University of Toronto. Raquel has had the pleasure of studying under notable Canadian jazz musicians including Laura Swankey, Alex Samaras, Andrew Downing, Steve Wallace, and Terry Promane. Additionally, in 2022, she participated in the program SIM: School for Improvisational Music which takes place in Brooklyn, New York. Currently, under the guidance of Noam Lemish, Raquel is working towards a master’s degree in composition at York.

Raquel released an EP with guitarist Julien Bradley-Combs titled Never, Never in January 2025 and is looking forward to releasing her first original album Kind Words in the summer of 2025.

Moreover, Raquel won the JAZZ 4 THE AGES vocal competition presented by the Niagara Jazz Festival in 2023. She actively performs at Toronto venues including Drom Taberna, the Drake Hotel, Ethica, the Tranzac, and more. She frequently collaborates with other local musicians including her vocal jazz co-composition projects with vocalist Alyssa Giammaria.

Raquel is a regular composer in Toronto. She frequently arranges for her own ensembles as well as for The University of Toronto’s Vocal Jazz Ensemble. She enjoys writing for various ensemble configurations in an array of musical styles.
